If the PA refuses to take action against the terrorists who have murdered 764 Israelis in the past two and a half years, Israel has no choice but to do so itself. This is the explanation for the day-long battle that began in the Sajaiya camp of Gaza early this morning, and ended with the killing of three wanted terrorists who refused to give themselves up. Along the way, eight IDF soldiers were wounded - two of them listed in "moderate" condition - and eight other armed PA terrorists were killed, as were two children.
The fighting began when an IDF Golani unit converged on a residential building in which a Hamas terrorist cell was hiding out. The Israelis surrounded the house and demanded that the terrorists give themselves up, but the latter unleashed a heavy barrage of gunfire, with more Hamas terrorists then arriving to continue the fighting. The battle lasted many hours longer than planned - because the Israeli forces tried not to endanger the unarmed civilians in whose presence the terrorists tried to find refuge.
Not far away, IDF forces destroyed several abandoned buildings suspected of being used as exit-points for underground arms-smuggling tunnels.
