IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir sent an official letter to members of the Knesset warning that proposed changes to military service could significantly undermine the army’s readiness.
Zamir cautioned that shortening mandatory service would reduce overall manpower, leading to a shortfall of thousands of combat soldiers and support personnel. He noted that he has previously raised these concerns in cabinet meetings and in discussions with a subcommittee of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.
Emphasizing future challenges, Zamir wrote that the IDF is expected to face expanded operational demands in the coming years and therefore must grow rather than shrink. “We need a large and strong army," he stressed.
He further warned that any reduction in regular service would place an increased burden on the reserve system. “The heavy price will be paid by reserve soldiers and their families," he wrote.
Concluding his letter, Zamir urged lawmakers to act responsibly and advance legislation addressing regular service, reserve duty, and recruitment needs.
