A unique three-day seminar entitled “Judaism and Jewish Descendants in Spain" will be held in Barcelona, Spain next week. Devoted to exploring various topics relating to the country’s “hidden Jews" - sometimes known as Marranos, or, as some prefer, Anusim - the seminar is being organized by the Jerusalem-based Amishav organization, and will include academics and rabbis from both Israel and Spain.

“The purpose of the seminar is to bring together some of the leading figures among Spain’s Jewish descendants, and to gain a better understanding of the challenges they confront,” said Michael Freund, Amishav Director and an Arutz-7 radio and television host. “The Jewish people need to do more to reach out to them, as many are grappling with fundamental questions of religious and cultural identity.”

Dozens of participants from across Spain have registered to attend, including representatives from Madrid, Barcelona, Palma de Majorca and Murcia. The program, running from May 1-3, will include lectures on the transmission of Jewish identity in the shadow of the Inquisition, a survey of crypto-Jewish communities on the Iberian Peninsula, a reading of Spanish Jewish poetry and a walking tour of Sephardic Barcelona.
