MK Rabbi Meir Porush (United Torah Judaism) has announced his candidacy for the Jerusalem mayoral race, scheduled for June 3. Porush said that he is confident of victory, due to his popularity in both the religious and right-wing camps. He is the son of Agudat Yisrael Honorary President Rabbi Menachem Porush and a scion of a long-time Jerusalemite family.
Incumbent Mayor Uri Lopoliansky, also a representative of the hareidi public, will announce his final decision on his own candidacy next week.
The two other major candidates in the mayoral race are Yigal Amedi of the Likud - who has the support of the Jewish Leadership faction of the Likud - and front-running independent Nir Bareket.
