Four left-wing activists were arrested this morning after having attempted to crash military roadblocks in a closed military zone. The activists had intended to hold a protest demonstration at Gush Etzion junction, south of Jerusalem, when IDF soldiers and Hevron policemen presented the group with an order designating the area closed to civilians. Four of the left-wing would-be protesters then attempted to burst illegally through military blockades set up at the site. They were subsequently apprehended and taken for police questioning.

Four border policemen were brought before a Jerusalem court this morning for

arraignment. The four are charged with using excessive violence in dealing with Arabs in the course of carrying out their duties. One of the soldiers was remanded to custody for another five days prior to the start of their trial. In a related incident, eight other border policeman were arrested yesterday on suspicion of having revenged themselves on Arabs in Hevron by deliberately seeking to injure people and committing acts of wanton vandalism against personal property. Sources in the Palestinian Authority claim that, among other things, the soldiers fired stun grenades into crowds and punctured tires on cars with PA license plates. The army is investigating the charges.
