Jerusalem's Deputy Mayor Yigal Amedi defeated Likud MK Roni Bar-On on Sunday for the right to represent the Likud party in the upcoming Jerusalem mayoral elections. Amedi defeated Bar-On, who was just elected to the Knesset, by a 9% margin.
The Labor Party has not yet announced its candidate, nor are there any signs that it plans to do so. Instead, it appears that Labor will endorse Jerusalem entrepreneur Nir Bareket, who is running as an independent candidate. A recent local newspaper poll indicated that Bareket is likely to defeat Amedi in the June 3rd race. Uri Lopoliansky, representing the hareidi public, who has been serving as acting mayor since Ehud Olmert resigned two months ago to enter the Knesset, has said that he will not run in the upcoming election.
