A Jewish organization visited a long-shuttered Jewish temple and school in Aleppo’s Al-Jemayliyah neighborhood during a religious‑cultural event, according to a report by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). The gathering included participation from an association active in northern Syria.
SOHR noted that two rabbis arrived from Israel without prior notice to attend the event. The organization published a video documenting the visit, describing it as the first such occurrence in Aleppo in many years and part of what it called a series of unusual Israeli activities inside Syria.
During the visit, the delegation examined two historic synagogues located in Al-Jemayliyah and Bab Al‑Nasr. SOHR sources reported that security forces heavily deployed around the site, sealing off the street and restricting access to the area during the event.
The report stated that the purpose of the visit was to review assets belonging to Syrian‑Jewish families. According to SOHR, the governor of Aleppo pledged to address the issue of those properties and to work toward safeguarding their rights after years in which corrupt networks allegedly seized them.
SOHR added that the developments come amid growing Israeli activity in Syria, including religious‑cultural events carried out away from media coverage. These actions have stirred concern among local residents regarding the possible expansion of Israeli influence in zones administered by Syria’s transitional authorities.
The report also mentioned that the arrival of the two rabbis followed similar events in Damascus several weeks earlier, including quiet meetings with local figures.
