A sharp confrontation was recorded today (Wednesday) at the UN Security Council during a discussion on the situation in Syria, against the backdrop of the Prime Minister's visit to the buffer zone near the border.
Israel's ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, attacked the post-Assad regime, claiming that there has been no real change in its policy, and that the country's minorities continue to suffer severe violence.
Ambassador Danon said in his remarks: “Israel has an obligation to our Druze brothers and sisters. Show us that Syria is ready for real change using actions, not slogans.”
Danon added: "It is impossible to talk about a 'new Syria' when Druze, Christians and Alawites are being massacred. Change is proven by actions: stopping the killings…and protecting minorities.
At the end of the session, the Syrian Ambassador to the UN, Ibrahim Olabi, responded to Ambassador Danon and said: "We have already proven ourselves to Syrians, to our region and to our allies...is Israel doing the same?"
Ambassador Danon added: "Israel will not allow militias on its border."
