Police have launched an investigation following serious threats directed at Rabbi Zevadya Cohen, head of the rabbinical courts in Tel Aviv and a candidate for the position of city chief rabbi.

According to authorities, unknown individuals threatened Rabbi Cohen that they would physically harm him if he did not withdraw from the race.

In recent days, officers visited the rabbi’s home to collect evidence, including reviewing footage from cameras on the street near his home.

Kan News reported that investigators continued their efforts today, conducting checks on the rabbi’s car as part of a search for additional evidence. Police emphasized that all necessary measures are being taken both to strengthen the investigation and to ensure the rabbi’s security, given the severity of the threats.

The election for Tel Aviv’s chief rabbi was announced two weeks ago and is scheduled for January. The city has not had a permanent chief rabbi for approximately eight years.
