The Israeli performing arts are earning recognition internationally more and more. This past month has seen an Israeli movie take first place at a leading film festival, and an Israeli play being selected as the opening for a prestigious international theater festival.
In recent years, Israeli films have been winning awards and prizes in many international festivals and competitions. The latest international success is the Israeli movie, The Barbeque People, directed by David Ofek and Yossi Madmony. It recently earned the award for best film at the Mar del Plata international film festival in Argentina, regarded as one of the ten most important film festivals in the world. The Barbeque People, which has not yet even been shown in Israel, takes place during a traditional Israeli Independence Day barbecue. In the film, family members attending the barbecue try to come to terms with their past.
An Israeli play, Myth, has been chosen to open the prestigious international theater festival at New York’s Lincoln Center this June. It will be performed in Hebrew, with a simultaneous English translation. Myth, directed by Rina Yerushalmi, and featuring the Itim Ensemble, in affiliation with the Cameri Theater, is based on Greek mythology and depicts a royal family struggle, with acts of revenge that continue from generation to generation. The show has attracted international interest and is set to be performed at upcoming international theater festivals: in Zurich, Switzerland, in August and in Dublin, Ireland, in October.
