Residents of the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem's Old City have raised concerns over severe evening traffic congestion caused when Jaffa Gate is opened to all vehicles after 6 p.m. Speaking to Arutz Sheva - Israel National News, locals said the unrestricted access leads to unauthorized vehicles entering the Old City, causing traffic jams that delay entry into the quarter by over 40 minutes.
The congestion often forces police to close the gate—but residents claim this response is reactive and lacks proper planning. They also complain that enforcement is weak, even when access is supposedly limited to vehicles with permits. “People without permits block the road for long periods, and there’s no supervision,” one resident said.
Adding to their frustration, residents say they are unable to receive guests, technicians, or deliveries in the evening because the police call center stops responding after 6 p.m.
One resident described a recent incident where he reported the lack of police presence, only to be told a patrol car was there—despite seeing no one on the ground. “Every evening entry has become a nightmare,” he said.
In response, the Israel Police stated that the issue falls under the jurisdiction of the local authorities. The Jerusalem Municipality countered that the gate’s closure is carried out at the request of the police, and it is their responsibility to provide on-site enforcement. The municipality added that it would engage in dialogue with the police to find a solution that serves both residents and visitors.
