Finnish MP Eemeli Peltonen was found dead inside parliament building
Members of parliament in Helsinki found the body of 30-year-old Peltonen lying on the floor inside the parliament building.
Peltonen, a member of parliament for the Social Democratic Party of Finland, is believed to have committed suicide, and this was not a criminal act.
In his latest post on his Instagram account, Peltonen wrote that he was suffering from a kidney disease and had contracted a secondary infection.
He wrote that "I have been absent from a lot of parliamentary work in recent weeks as I am suffering from a kidney disease that has led to another infection. I am being treated with intravenous antibiotics."
The death of the young MP shocked his fellow members of parliament in Helsinki and the citizens of Finland. "The death of Eemeli Peltonen deeply shocks me and all of us. He was a much-loved member of our community, and we will miss him dearly. A young life ended too soon. We share the grief of his loved ones and wish them strength in their time of grief," said chairwoman of the Social Democratic Party of Finland's parliamentary group.
The Finnish police, who arrived in large numbers at the parliament building in Helsinki, have opened an investigation into the circumstances of Peltonen's death.
The young MP began his political career at the age of 18, when he was elected as a member of the Järvenpää city council. Four years later, he was elected chairman of the city council, and in 2023, he was elected as a member of the Finnish National Parliament.
