While most marked the solemn fast of Tisha B’Av in reflection and mourning, the Israel Dog Unit (IDU), a nonprofit organization specializing in working dogs, chose to emphasize the baseless love for another that the Sages teach will ultimately reverse the tragedies of the day.

On the day commemorating the destruction of the Jewish Temple nearly two millennia ago, IDU volunteers were engaged in bringing smiles to children with special needs in Beitar Illit. The IDU’s dog handlers hosted a special demonstration for children from the BeLev Echad organization, providing a joyful distraction for the kids and much-needed respite for their parents during the fast.

Just days later, the IDU continued its outreach by participating in a community and road safety day in Alon Shvut, Gush Etzion. At the request of the Etzion police station and in cooperation with the National Road Safety Authority, the IDU performed an educational and entertaining canine demonstration. This initiative aimed to strengthen community bonds and promote safety awareness among residents, especially children.

“Our dogs and volunteers are not only search-and-rescue assets—they're ambassadors of hope and connection,” said the IDU spokesperson. “Whether saving lives or inspiring them, we remain committed to the people along the way.”
