Israel's security establishment, after conducting intensive discussions on the status of the threat to Israel from Iraq, has decided to maintain the current state of preparedness. It may even continue for weeks to come, in light of the uncertainty as to the present extent of the Scud missile threat.

Though the Americans have invested great efforts in neutralizing the Scud threat, US teams failed last week to discover missiles in areas where it had been believed they would be. US Ambassador Daniel Kurtzer and General Charles Simpson, the liaison between the U.S. Army and the Israel Defense Forces, met on Thursday with Prime Minister Sharon to discuss the situation.

Meanwhile, Israel's Arrow and Patriot missile batteries are still being manned and remain on high alert. Citizens are still bidden to keep their gas masks within arm's reach, and parents are requested to continue sending their children to school with the masks.
