The following information provided by the IDF's Homefront Command.

When the siren is heard…

Identify the siren (a one-minute rising and falling siren signifies a genuine alert).

Turn off stoves and heaters, air-conditioners and water and gas taps in the apartment.

Close all windows and exterior doors.

Go into the protected space together with the protective kit and a personal bag prepared in advance for each member of the family (in accordance with the detailed instructions below). Pets can also be taken into the protected space.

Complete the insulation - after all members of the family are inside, complete the sealing of the protected space. When entering a standard protected space, APS or FPS, you need only close windows and doors (and ventilation pipes if there are any). In a sealed room, you must complete the insulation by using adhesive tape to cover the joint between the door and doorframe and between the doorframe and the wall. Lay a cloth soaked in water along the bottom of the door.

Putting on the gas mask - for gas masks with blowers, protective hood kits and 'babysitter' kits, it is important to ensure that the blower is operating before the mask is worn. For gas masks without blowers, check that the cover is taken off the filter and check the seal as explained in the instructions given out with the protective kit.

If you are not at home - in a built-up area, put on the protective mask and take shelter indoors as quickly as possible. If you are in a car, stop at the side of the road, turn off the engine, close the doors, windows, and ventilation vents, and put on the gas mask.

Listen to the radio or television - and follow the instructions broadcast by the media.

Sitting in the protected space

Sit low down, preferably on the floor, on a mattress or cushions.

Sit close to an internal wall that is at right angles to the external wall, as far as possible from the external wall and the window.

Additional recommendations

It is highly recommended not to heat the room.

Do not use window air-conditioners or central air-conditioning. Only split air-conditioners may be operated.

Make sure that members of the family stay awake while wearing the gas masks.

Do not strike a match or smoke in the room.

It is very important to keep the room in good order. Between attacks, make sure that the adhesive tape has not come loose, replenish the supply of food and water and check the radio batteries.

Remember! Keeping calm and carefully following all the instructions will help your family cope better with the stay in the protected space.

Looking after children and babies

If the child objects to using the protective device, try to calm him and persuade him.

Distress can be alleviated by various activities such as reading stories, drawing, playing games, watching television and listening to music.

Looking after people who are ill

Asthma sufferers - people who suffer from asthma can use a regular gas mask, but must be careful to follow a number of rules:

Use your medical inhaler before putting on the gas mask (taking the appropriate dose).

Try not to be too active while wearing the gas mask.

In the event of an asthma attack, remove the mask for a few seconds in order to take the medicine, and then replace the mask.

Vomiting - in the event of vomiting into the gas mask, remove the mask, and remove the filter, clean the mask with damp cloth, replace the filter and put the mask on again.

Medicine - if there is an immediate need to take a dose of medicine, remove the mask, take the medicine, and then replace the mask. It is important that this action be carried out as quickly as possible.

Glasses - glasses should not be worn inside the gas mask because they are likely to affect the seal of the mask, but they can be worn over the mask on the outside. Contact lenses can be used while wearing the gas mask only if they do not irritate the eyes. Such irritation is likely to lead to removal of the mask during the attack.

Leaving the protected space

Only leave the protected space and remove your gas mask after receiving explicit instructions to do so by means of the radio or television.
