Palestinian Media Watch, under the direction of Itamar Marcus, has provided an insight into the attitude of Arabs in the Palestinian Authority to the reports of the first American and British casualties in Iraq - through a cartoon. The cartoon, reproduced here, appeared in an official PA daily and depicts a bleeding British and American soldier in the talons of an Iraqi eagle, symbol of the Saddam Hussein government. Marcus comments, "The cartoon... from the official Palestinian daily, depicting a British and American soldier caught in the claws of the Iraqi eagle, is indicative of the Palestinian yearning for significant American and British losses in the war."
This cartoon merely gives visual expression to thoughts expressed recently by Islamic leaders on official, controlled PA television and radio, as provided by the Foreign Broadcast Information Service of the US government and made public by mideastweb.org:
PA television carried the Friday sermon from the central Sheikh Ijlin mosque in Gaza, in which the imam, Ibrahim Mudayris, said, "God will drown the small pharaoh of our time, the president of the United States. America will drown in our seas. It will face death in our skies and lands, God willing. America and all tyrants will drown in their blood in our land, God willing." He further identifies the PA with Iraq as virtually a single, unified entity by saying, "We must resist for the sake of our dignity and honor and the liberation of our land from the despotic Zionist and Crusader tyrants. It is a Crusader, Zionist campaign. I assure you, I am not the one who said it. It was announced by the small Pharaoh himself when he said it is a Crusade."
"God willing, the United States will be annihilated," the PA imam told his flock.
The imam then made a further link between the PA, Iraq and Afghanistan of the Taliban, praying, "O Lord, O Supporter of the oppressed, we have been treated unjustly in Palestine, Iraq, and Afghanistan.... O Lord, destroy the pillars of America and Britain. O Lord, shake the land under their feet. O Lord, shake the land under Israel's feet. O Lord, O avenger.... Amen."
Meanwhile, the Ramallah-based Voice of Palestine, another official PA outlet, carried the Friday sermon from al-Aqsa mosque on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. There, the imam, Muhammad Hussein, noted that Islam forbids befriending infidels. "From the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque we reject and condemn this criminal aggression against Iraq and its brave people," the imam said, appealing "to all the peoples of the Islamic nation to rush to the defense of their honor by repulsing the aggression against their brethren in creed and religion. They must not wait for any stands to be taken by the ruling regimes in the world of Arabdom and Islam, as they have been bared out and their conspiracy against the nation and its resources has been exposed."
This imam, too, ended his Friday sermon with a prayer to Allah: "O Lord, O revealer of the book, mover of the clouds, and vanquisher of infidels, defeat the infidels and help us triumph over them.... O Lord, shake the land under their feet and make fate turn against them, for they have tyrannized and came to fight God and his prophet.
"O Lord, kill them all and leave no one alive," he concluded.
