A U.S. soldier was killed and 13 others were wounded early this morning when a Moslem American soldier threw grenades and fired into a tent of the 101st Airborne Division. The New York Times reported that a division spokesman said that "an American soldier is in custody," and that military sources described him as an officer, an American citizen, and a Muslim convert. The victimized soldiers were among those poised to move later today into Iraq as part of the second wave of ground troops from the 101st. The spokesman said that the midnight explosions from the grenades and gunfire, after two full days of Scud alerts and attacks, created a chaotic scene of smoke, alarm, and cries for help. Some of the injuries were described as very serious. "Many soldiers said that today's incident cut deeper than an enemy attack," the Times reported.
