The Jewish National Fund and American Friends of Likud have organized a lightning Action of Unity Mission to Israel, scheduled for this coming week, Monday through Friday. The joint leadership of the mission wrote, in email promoting the mission, "As leaders of Jewish organizations, it is imperative that we immediately show our support for Israel by participating in this solidarity mission." The participants are scheduled to visit a Jerusalem school with the Minister of Education, Limor Livnat, and to meet with children and teachers to discuss the effects of the Gulf War on the school system. They will also meet members of Knesset, residents of Gilo, doctors

at Hadassah Hospital, and American soldiers at Patriot missile sites. The group will also take time to plant trees in a JNF forest in honor of the astronauts of the ill-fated Columbia space shuttle.

Overseas, another sort of solidarity effort is underway, for the second time, in Toronto. From March 23 through 26, 2003, the Jewish Community Center on Bathurst Street will host more than 75 merchants from Israel, all marketing their products in one location. The Israel Mall, as it is known, provides vital financial opportunities for many Israelis whose livelihoods have been devastated as a direct result of the Arab onslaught against Israel and the uncertainty of the Iraq war. It also serves as an important opportunity for Israeli businesses to make local contacts that will hopefully translate into export possibilities. Mall merchants will offer ample products, in addition to unique visual art pieces, ceramics, toys, Judaica, t-shirts, perfumes, jewelry, and more. The Israeli guests will be hosted in the homes of local families for the duration of the mall.

"The fact that a second edition of the Israel Mall is happening less than a year after the first, which took place in August, 2002 indicates the popularity of this event," says Israel Mall spokesperson Anne Maurer.

The Israel Mall is sponsored by the Bathurst Jewish Community Center, the Government of Israel Economic Mission to Canada, the Israel Now Consortium of 115 organizations, State of Israel Bonds, and the Toronto Zionist Council.
