Rabbi Eli and Dina Horowitz, murdered by Palestinian terrorists in their home on Friday night, were buried close to midnight Sunday night in the Har HaMenuchot cemetery in Jerusalem. Many thousands of people took part in the nearly eight-hour funeral, which began in Hevron and continued to Kiryat Arba, the Jerusalem neighborhood of Bayit Vegan, and Har HaMenuchot. IDF Hevron Brigade Commander Col. Haggai Mordechai delivered a brief eulogy at the funeral: "I know that Rav Eli was among the pillars of Yeshivat Shavei Hevron, worked hard for unity in the nation, and was a model of pleasantness, and love of man, nation, and land. To my sorrow, we were unable to prevent this terrible murder…"
Kiryat Arba Chief Rabbi Dov Lior said, "The City of Patriarchs is a national asset that shines forth strength, fortitude, and endurance. Everyone who lives here - every man, woman and child - is like a soldier standing guard to prevent the wilds of the desert from taking over the rest of the Land. What we need is a 'living fence' of more communities, bigger communities - not a fence of concrete and metal. It's not enough to prevail over the evil ones; we have to also to positive things, such as expanding the communities throughout our Land. This will guarantee peace and security… We all believe that the spirit of Rav Eli and his wife, who were taken from us in the height of their lifework, will continue to shine even from above just as it did while they were with us - the concern for their family and for the community… May G-d avenge their blood, and the blood of all those who were killed by these debased evil people…"
Among those who eulogized the couple in Jerusalem were Haifa Chief Rabbi She'ar-Yashuv Cohen, Rabbi Oded Vilansky - a rabbi in Yeshivat Har HaMor whose son and daughter-in-law were murdered in a terrorist attack last August - and Housing Minister Effie Eitam. Eitam said that the family members of the terrorists must be expelled.
Five other people were wounded in the Friday night attack, including one woman - Aliza Naomi bat (daughter of) Leah Chaya - who was shot in the neck, chest, stomach and leg, and is in serious but stable condition after surgery. She is the mother of 12 children. Rabbi and Mrs. Horowitz were the 17th husband-and-wife couple murdered by Palestinian terrorists during the 30-month-old Oslo War.
