An Arab sniper has severely wounded an IDF officer this afternoon at the Kalanit outpost in Gush Katif in central Gaza.
The Arab opened fire from a dwelling located next to the outpost at the edge of Arab populated city of Han Yunis. IDF soldiers from the Shimshon (Samson) brigade returned fire and an officer was severely wounded in the exchange. The officer has been evacuated to Soroka hospital in Beersheva.
The area between PLO controlled Han Yunis and the Israeli towns of Gush Katif has served as fertile ground for terrorist snipers who take aim at IDF troops guarding Gush Katif. Sergeant Doron Lev, 19, was recently killed by an Arab terrorist sniper at an IDF base near the Israeli town of Neve Dekalim in Gush Katif. Lev also served in the Shimshon unit. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine took responsibility for that attack.
