The water level of Lake Kineret rose another 11 centimeters over the weekend to a level that is 2.57 meters below its maximal level. The lake is lacking only some 450 million cubic meters of water to reach this level.
According to Israeli daily “Ha-aretz”, since the start of the winter the Kinneret water level has risen 2.95 meters, and on Sunday reached 211.47 meters below sea level. The water level has continued to rise despite the fact that there was no rain in the past few days.
The rapid rise in the lake's water level will enable the Mekorot water company to pump almost six times as much water to the national water carrier, from 4 to 25 million cubic meters a month.
The pumping is intended to increase the water supply to the national water carrier, in order to reduce pumping from the coastal aquifer, which causes water salination.
