The Islamic Jihad suffered two serious blows in the last 24 hours, as IDF troops working in unison with General Security Service (the Shin-Bet) agents arrested the Islamic Jihad commander in Jenin last night, and killed Usma Assaf, a senior Islamic Jihad figure, in Bethlehem. The latter terrorist was shot and killed as he attempted to flee IDF troops who had come to arrest him. One soldier was lightly wounded during the operation. In other successful IDF operations, border police last night arrested two Arabs in the Shomron village of Chawara suspected of taking part in terror attacks. The two were armed with handguns when taken into custody. In total,

seven PA residents suspected of terrorist activities were arrested by soldiers during the night. In addition, army sappers and engineers demolished the homes of Hamas terrorist Ibrahim Dahmas, who was involved in the Dolphinarium discotheque suicide bombing, and of Hamas terrorist Zayid Qilani, who took part in the planning of the Mei Ami terror attack, in which one person was murdered. And in Shechem, IDF soldiers discovered a major weapons cache hidden inside a cave. Among the items found were mortar shells, ammunition, bombs, IDF uniforms, and flack jackets.

In an ongoing effort to prevent further rocket attacks on Israeli cities, IDF troops during the night took up positions in northern Gaza, in the Jabalya and Beit Hanoun areas, clearing some fields and implementing other necessary changes towards securing the area. During the operation, soldiers came under attack by Arab gunmen, but no injuries were reported. The soldiers returned fire.
