The manufacture and production of mortar shells makes for a widespread and thriving industry throughout Gaza - and it is overseen by none other than the Chief of the Palestinian Authority\'s Para-military Police, Razi Jabali. So revealed one of Gaza\'s leading mortar manufacturers, Sa\'id \'Ashi, during his interrogation by Israeli General Security Service agents this week. Jabali has been wanted in Israel for years for his involvement in specific terrorist attacks, and \'Ashi - the owner of a metal factory in Gaza - was apprehended three days ago after his plant was bombed by Israeli jets.

\'Ashi testified that he has manufactured 10,000 mortar shells and hand grenades, with much of the work taking place in PA lathes and in PA police headquarters. \'Ashi, who said he learned the business while working in an Israeli metal factory at the Erez Checkpoint, was a good pupil: his aluminum shells are considered of higher quality and better performance than previous models, and can reach longer ranges.
