In a combined effort of the Jewish National Fund (JNF), the Tourism Ministry, the Jewish Agency, the Education Ministry, the Culture Ministry, the Chief IDF Education Officer, and others, a new project to prepare Israeli tourist sites for organized tours of Biblical Israel is underway.

The objective of the project, according to the Tourism Ministry, is to increase the connection with the Bible in a challenging and experiential fashion, by identifying parts of the country with stories from the Bible. The physical presence at a site in Israel that is mentioned in the Bible often provides the tourist with a new, different perspective on the Biblical events, allowing him to partially experience the written text, a Tourism Ministry spokesperson emphasized.

The project is intended for both foreign and domestic tourism. It will include guided tours for families, individuals and groups, with a special emphasis on the education system and the youth (such as, schools, youth movements, clubs and military inductees). The project involves investment in the Biblical sites in Israel, marketing, guidebooks and maps. In some cases, the Biblical sites and vistas will be recreated in modern Israel, in order to enhance the experiential element of the “Biblical tour”.

Among the twelve tourist projects that have so far been selected for investment by the institutions involved are: Samson the Hero - Between Tzara’a and Eshtaol; the Battle of David and Goliath - in the Elah Valley; in the Footsteps of the Ark of the Covenant; the War of Deborah, Barak and Sisera on Mt. Tabor; Eliyahu the Prophet on Mt. Carmel; and more.
