Five residents of Gilo were wounded when Palestinians fired on southern Jerusalem last night. Among them, Chaim Gelernter, 64, lost an eye, while three girls were hurt by flying broken glass. Gelernter\'s son Aviv told Arutz-7 today that his father was lying on his living room couch when a bullet hit him, and passed from his right eye to his left cheek. Twenty apartments in Gilo were damaged by the gunfire.

Residents of the embattled Gilo neighborhood took part in a special Likud Knesset faction meeting last night, and raised their fears, frustrations, and concerns at the ongoing and deteriorating security situation in their homes. The MKs called upon their leader, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, to take actions to end the incessant shooting attacks on Gilo. MKs Moshe Arens and Michael Eitan said that Sharon should reconquer parts of the Palestinian village of Beit Jala, from where the firing originates.

Likud faction head MK Ze\'ev Boim, who was also present at this meeting, did not agree. He later told Arutz-7 that reconquering Beit Jala would \"exactly play into Arafat\'s hands, who will use it to bring international observers here…\" He said that he wrote a letter to Prime Minister Sharon, which will be delivered today, stating, \"Shooting at our capital is clearly intolerable, and the measures being taken now - the bulletproofing of windows and the retaliatory shooting - are only defensive in nature. Other actions can and must be found.\"

Boim defended the government\'s current policy, saying it is different than that of the previous government: \"True, it doesn\'t appear that way in Gilo and other places, but we are in an extended war, and the government is fighting continuously…\" At this point Arutz-7\'s Haggai Segal interrupted, \"Where do you see the government fighting against terrorism?\" Boim responded, \"We should not assume that there is a one-shot solution; this is a different type of war… Fissures have begun to appear between the Palestinian people and their leadership.\"
