Yisrael B'Aliyah (YBA) party chairman Natan Sharansky is negotiating for the position of head of the Jewish Agency, Arutz-7 has learned. High-level sources in the Jewish Agency explained that Sharansky agreed to the post-election absorption of YBA into the Likud after having been promised the Agency's top post. Media reports immediately after the merger indicated that the former Prisoner of Zion would receive a ministerial appointment, but it will not be possible to serve in that capacity as Jewish Agency chairman.
After the recent national elections, Sharansky accepted personal responsibility for YBA's poor showing - the party dropped to two seats -and announced his resignation from the Knesset. If he assumes the helm of the Jewish Agency, he will be replacing Salai Meridor, who is in line to become Israel's next ambassador to England.
