An Israeli delegation to Washington, D.C. came away empty-handed yesterday after meetings with senior US National Security Council officials to discuss Israel's request for loan guarantees and other extraordinary economic aid. The delegation, headed by the Director of the Prime Minister's Office, Dov Weisglass, left Washington with only superficial progress. The Americans requested more information regarding the Israeli government's intended budget cuts and economic reforms.
The Israeli request, for eight billion dollars in loan guarantees and an additional four billion dollars in military aid, was made in light of the ongoing PLO terrorist war, the impending war in Iraq and the Hizbullah threat from the north. The talks were attended by senior security and finance representatives, as well as Israeli Ambassador to the United States Danny Ayalon.
