The Knesset chose Ruby Rivlin of the Likud as its next Speaker this morning, by an overwhelming 103-7 margin. In his first speech, Rivlin said today that he would work to ensure the Knesset's independence, reminding the judicial branch that "the Knesset, and only the Knesset, makes laws in Israel." Wearing a white yarmulke on his head, he opened his remarks in a breaking voice and with an emotional quotation from a traditional prayer, seeking "permission from the Great and Awesome G-d," etc.

Former Cabinet Secretary and new MK Gideon Saar will be the Likud Knesset faction chairman, and former Industry and Trade Minister Dalia Itzik will be his counterpart in Labor.

The Likud reported good progress in its coalition talks with Shas today, and Shinui reported some progress in its talks with the National Religious Party.
