In December 1994, the year after the Oslo Accords were signed, IDF reservist Shmuel Meiri took a wrong turn into Manara Square in Ramallah. Almost in "rehearsal" for the horrific lynching of two other Israeli reservists in the same area six years later, Meiri was set upon by an Arab mob, which beat him severely and stole his weapon. Footage of the attempted murder was shown at the time on Israeli television. It was revealed today that the General Security Service (GSS) and Israeli police had arrested a resident of the village of Jelazoun, just north of Ramallah, for the attempted lynching. Police said today that several others have already been arrested and sentenced in the case.
