Maj.-Gen. Amos Gilad, designated to be the national "soother" and spokesman in the event of a war with Iraq, told reporters this morning that a U.S. offensive against Iraq has been put off for about 2-3 weeks. He referred to Saddam Hussein as a "weakened monster," and said that Israel has no reason to panic. Gilad noted that Saddam only has a few planes, a weakened army, internal opposition, and no real support in the Arab world or among his immediate neighbors, "which are divided into those he has attacked and those he wanted to attack, such as Saudi Arabia."
