A staple of the current pro-Hamas demonstrations in the west are the speeches by the “As a Jew”s invoking the story of Passover to justify their joining the chorus demonizing the Jewish state and calling for its destruction. Like most of the left’s Orwellian Newspeak, identifying Israel as the modern-day Pharaoh is course an inversion of reality. The Passover story should be invoked to cry out “Let my people go!” on behalf of the Jews locked away in captivity by the Hamas. The salvation of the people of Israel in the Passover story is desperately needed again for their descendants, who are surrounded by enemies explicit and proud about their incessant efforts to annihilate them.

If those “As a Jew”s were in ancient Egypt, undoubtably they would have been the loud justifiers of the Pharaoh’s persecution of the Jews. They would speak out against the evil Jewish colonialism of Egypt for taking away valuable lebensraum from the indigenous population. The enslavement of the Jews would be presented by them as historical justice to recompensate the indigenous people of color for the appropriation of their resources by those white colonialists. The current Jewish antisemitism of organizations such as “Jewish Voice for Peace” is however much more perverse than this hypothetical scenario. Surely, Pharaoh himself would protest comparison to the Hamas. The slavery of the Jews in Egypt was much more humane the hellish horrors of Jews in the Hamas captivity. Pharaoh settled merely for enslaving the Jews whereas the Hamas aspires to their annihilation.

In truth there is way to invoke the story of Passover on behalf of Palestinians in Gaza. “Free Gaza!” should be a call to free Palestinians from the brutal totalitarian regime of the Hamas which has brought about them so much suffering. If the world would unite under a call to “Free Gaza from the Hamas” there would hope for peace and prosperity not only for the people of Israel but the for the people of Gaza.
