On the first anniversary of the kidnaping and murder of Wall Street Journal correspondent Daniel Pearl by Islamist terrorists in Pakistan, the Jerusalem Foundation will host an evening in his memory. It is being held in conjunction with the Mishkenot Sha'ananim International Cultural Center and at the initiation of the Pearl family. Slated for the night of February 22, 2003, the memorial event will commence with a tribute to the late Daniel Pearl by Knesset member Rabbi Michael Melchior. “Journalism in the War Zone,” a symposium on various facets of journalistic work in areas of conflict and strife, will comprise the main portion of the evening. The symposium panel is to include Bob Simon of CBS, Walid Omari of the Gulf satellite news station al-Jazeera, Charles Enderlin of France’s Channel 2, Amira Hass of Ha’aretz, Eric Silver of the Independent and Afghanistan specialist Terence White, who was a correspondent for Agence France Presse in Pakistan from 1992-1997. At the family’s request, the evening will conclude with original jazz pieces performed by the Jerusalem Yellow Submarine Ensemble.
In addition, the Pearl family and friends invite people of all faiths to join them in interfaith memorial services to be held in Los Angeles, New York, Toronto and Jerusalem, in a show of solidarity against terrorism and intolerance. Friends and family of Daniel Pearl living in Israel, journalists and members of the foreign press in Israel will be attending the 8:00pm memorial in Mishkenot Sha'ananim, at the Konrad Adenauer Conference Center. The evening will be in English and will be open to the general public.
