Almost a third of the new Knesset Members to be sworn in next week are new to the job, and they received some introductory lectures and a tour of the Knesset building today. Arutz-7's Haggai Seri reports that their first lesson was in "media," in that they were accompanied by mobs of reporters and cameramen; many of the new legislators had their parliamentary aides on hand to help them attract the reporters' attention.
The rookie MKs heard a lecture by Knesset Secretary Aryeh Hahn on parliamentary procedure, such as how to propose legislation, how to submit queries, etc.. After a lecture by the Knesset legal counsel, they were treated to the most interesting "class" of all, explaining the details of their remuneration. They were informed that as Members of the Knesset of Israel, they will be entitled to a base pay of 30,232 shekels ($6,205) a month, plus car expenses, 290 shekels a month on clothing, 2335 shekels per month for cellular phone expenses, and much more. For the sake of comparison, U.S. Senators earned $145,100 ($12,100 a month) in 2001.
