US Defense Minister Donald Rumsfeld will meet in Italy today with Prime Minister Berlusconi, one of the lone European leaders who whole-heartedly support the American plans to attack Iraq. Russia and France have moderated their objections to the attack, and Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister even said that there is no need for another UN decision in order to disarm Iraq.
Middle East Newsline reported today that the U.S. no longer promises immunity to Saddam Hussein and his aides in exchange for their voluntary exile. Though such a deal had been discussed, "The White House is feeling more confident these days," a diplomatic source said. "The immunity idea appeared to have been a sop to deflect Arab and Islamic opposition to an invasion of Iraq. Now, the administration feels it has enough military and political support so it doesn't have to make any promises." Another 15,000 U.S. troops and 300 combat helicopters are on their way to the Persian Gulf.
