Romanian worker Livio Bukanche, 33, arrived in Rambam Hospital in Haifa last Wednesday with a 7-centimeter long nail (almost 3 inches) stuck in his eye - and yet today he sees perfectly. Maariv reports that he had been working at a construction site in the north with a nail gun when one nail was shot at a wall, but bounced back and pierced his eye. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital's trauma unit, but his condition began to deteriorate. Two eye surgeons, Drs. Michael Gilboa and Michael Yulish, worked for two hours to remove the 6-mm thick nail. "His other eye is a 'lazy eye,'" Dr. Gilboa later said, "so that the accident could have left him nearly blind." Following some days of laser treatment, it became clear that the eye had in fact healed. "It's more than a dream, it's a real miracle," Bukanche said yesterday. He is expected to leave the hospital today or tomorrow.
