Today, discount coupons are an integral part of our daily lives. In fact, we've all had the experience of receiving a discount on a purchase in a store, or a 50% discount on a 2nd item, or a coupon for our next purchase or the new collection.

On the Internet, this practice has also become commonplace, and is highly prized by web users constantly on the lookout for good deals. According to a survey carried out by Promocodius in 2023, 7 out of 10 Internet users had already used a promo code, and 60% had already abandoned a purchase because they couldn't find a promotional code.

“In fact, using promotional codes in your web marketing strategy is an excellent way to boost sales, provided that retail has established a real marketing strategy and combines couponing with other actions,” says Alisa Sklyarova, PromoCodius project manager.

Discount coupons and promo codes boost sales

Promotional codes are an ally for e-commerce retails, boosting sales and building customer loyalty. According to the survey conducted by Promocodius, more than 53% of consumers are ready to abandon their shopping baskets if they don't find a promo code beforehand. That's why promo codes are multiplying at breakneck speed.

World leaders in e-commerce, such as Amazon, eBay or Shopify, know this very well. Let’s take Amazon as an example. Throughout the year, the site offers a wide range of exclusive offers: promo code Amazon, discount vouchers and gifts. What's more, some exclusive offers include special features such as Amazon 4-installment payment, free shipping, additional discounts and early access to special offers. Other big e-commerce platforms do more or less the same.

Reasons to include couponing in online marketing strategy

There are many reasons to use coupon codes in online stores. If we had to choose just 3, they would be the following:

  • Increase traffic
  • Increase sales
  • Customer loyalty

Online discount coupons enable the e-commerce site to make itself known to potential customers, to bring back former customers, but also to convince hesitant customers to place an order. According to an analysis by PromoCodius, the conversion rate for e-commerce sites offering a coupon reaches 7%, compared with 0.2% for e-commerce sites without a coupon code. All the more reason to take an interest in couponing!

As the margin on a product sold with a discount is inevitably reduced, the shop needs to think carefully beforehand about the promotional codes to be used, and therefore about the strategy to be adopted. This is essential to know how to give a shop's sales a real boost in a methodical way. It's important, however, that couponing isn't the only marketing action. Experts advise combining it with other web marketing techniques to optimize the site and its sales.

It’s also important to realize that this type of operation must be in line with the brand's image, so the e-commerce brand should be careful if it wants to position itself as a prestigious brand or is already recognized for its high-end products. It's hard to imagine a luxury brand offering numerous discount coupons.
