The Movement for Quality in Government has appealed to the Supreme Court against the bill known, incorrectly, as the Deri Law. The proposed bill originally stated that parole may be granted to convicted offenders after they have served half - not 2/3 - of their prison terms. However, the version passed by the Knesset two days ago contains a \"retroactive\" clause, stipulating that even those who were sentenced before the law was passed - such as Aryeh Deri of Shas - would benefit from it.
The Movement claims that the law is a blow against Basic Law: Human Rights and Dignity which guarantees that citizens may feel secure in the knowledge that they are protected, to the best of the State\'s ability, from crimes committed against them. The Movement further claims that the revised law is based only on a desire to have Aryeh Deri freed from prison more quickly. Proponents of the law claim, however, that it was originally proposed well before Deri was convicted.
