Meretz leader Yossi Sarid said this evening, following the publication of the results of the exit polls, that if the polls are in fact correct, he will resign and hand over the leadership of the party to "new blood."

Tommy Lapid, leader of the Shinui party which took many voters from Meretz, called upon Prime Minister Sharon to form a "secular unity government" of Likud, Labor, and Shinui - a coalition of some 67-70 Knesset seats. Labor continues to say that it will not join a unity government - but the analysts are skeptical that the party will remain steadfast in its refusal.

Sarid has served in the Knesset since 1974. He began in the Labor Party, and helped form the Ratz party in the 11th Knesset. In the next knesset, Ratz joined with two other parties to form Meretz.
