At a conference of the Yesha Rabbis Council in Jerusalem last week, former Chief Rabbi Avraham Shapira called upon the parties that are "standing watch on behalf of the Torah and the Land" to united after the elections and act as one political entity. This will prevent the Prime Minister from using the "divide and conquer" method of forming a government, Rabbi Shapira said. His call was directed to the National Religious Party, the National Union, Yisrael B'Aliya, and Herut.
Reactions:
Michael Kleiner (Herut): "I am willing to form a block against a government that would try to establish a Palestinian state." He also said that if a narrow right-wing government is formed, he would agree to support it from without.
Zevulun Orlev (NRP): "We are willing to join a united front. The Yesha Rabbis are an important spiritual leadership, and we will give their call due consideration… I would not want to see a secular government that would boycott Shas or United Torah Judaism."
Aryeh Eldad (Moledet, National Union): "We will begin trying to unite the right-wing parties right after the elections, because that's the only way to save the State of Israel from destruction… If a right-wing bloc is formed, Sharon will have no choice but to include it in the government."
A Yisrael B'Aliyah spokesman responded that the party would be happy to hear from the Rabbis Council more details on the proposal to unite the parties.
