Israel at the polls. Some 4.7 million voters, about 91% of whom live permanently in Israel, are eligible to vote today for one of 27 parties running for the 16th Knesset. Only about 14 parties are expected to receive the minimum required number of votes - 1.5% of the total valid votes - and thus enter the Knesset.
As of noontime, 24% of the electorate had voted - compared to 21% at this time in the 1999 elections.
As of 10:00 this morning, only 10.2% of the eligible voters had exercised their rights to do so - as opposed to 14.2% at that time in the 1999 elections. Today's weather forecast does not appear to be helping the situation. Intermittent rain is expected in the north today, and light rain along the coastal plane areas. The rain will intensify tonight.
