Knesset Education Committee Chairman Zevulun Orlev (National Religious Party) proposed legislation this week that would establish a Council for Higher Torah Education. The body would be parallel to the existing Council for Higher Education, and would be authorized to bestow degrees on students studying in the yeshivot it recognizes, as universities currently do. \"This law is designed to remedy the lack of symmetry,\" Orlev said, \"between university students and those studying in higher Torah institutions, who currently have no recognized framework to evaluate their education. Is it justified that a student who spends several years in his studies cannot receive an official state-recognized diploma just because he is not studying in a university?\" The government has not yet announced whether it will support the proposed legislation.
