For the second time in two weeks, Arab forces have shelled the city of Sderot in southern Israel with rockets produced in the Palestinian Authority. At least five rockets fired from the PA-controlled Beit Hanoun area of northern Gaza slammed into Sderot this morning, according to city mayor Eli Moiyal. One woman was transported to Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon for treatment for hysteria after one of the rockets landed in her yard. As news of the shelling broke, students in Sderot were removed to bomb shelters and sealed rooms, in compliance with Ministry of Education directives. Mayor Moiyal told Israel Radio that it appears the rockets fired on his city today are an improved version of those fired on Sderot in the past, as they traveled further and caused more damage.
It was also revealed today that a Qassam rocket was fired last night from northern PA-controlled Gaza at a kibbutz south of Ashkelon, along Israel’s southern coast. The rocket landed on the shore, causing no injuries or damage. Today’s artillery bombardment was at least the seventh such attack on Sderot in the past two years. Last week, on the morning of January 12, three Qassam rockets were fired on communities in the region, with one exploding near an elementary school in Sderot. The first PA rocket attack took place in April of 2001.
Last week, IDF troops entered Beit Hanoun, in Gaza, in search of the Qassam rocket launchers and the terrorists responsible for firing them. After previous Qassam rocket attacks, IDF air and ground forces struck Palestinian Authority targets.
