Security forces in Binyamin are searching for two escaped Islamic Jihad terrorists. The prisoners managed to leave the Ofer Detention Facility near Ramallah during the course of the night. It is feared that they are made it to Ramallah.
Ironically, the IDF Spokesperson presented information on the positive conditions at the Ofer prison just two days ago. The facility was opened ten months ago and holds 737 security detainees; once a week, some are transferred to other facilities and room is made for new arrivals. "I always explain to my people," the commander of the facility said, "that the terms of the detention are not the punishment, rather the detention itself is punishment enough. We treat the detainees humanely and there are no cases of violence here... Our daily job is to work with 750 detainees, when naturally each one has his own different needs. We try to help, whether by phoning the home, or by answering some other request that does not compromise the security of the facility." During the day, although soldiers
conduct random searches of the wards for security reasons, the detainees are free to play soccer, volleyball, ping pong, work out in the gym, and pray. One guard said, "Their food is better than the food the soldiers eat, since their food is supplemented by the U.N. They eat steaks and enjoy cold drinks."
