A new three-kilometer (1.8 mile) road connecting Maale Adumim from the east, to Jerusalem, is scheduled to open this morning. The road took three and a half years to construct and it contains two 550-meter tunnels that run under the campus of Hebrew University on Mount Scopus. Maale Adumim, a city of over 25,000 Jews, is the largest single Jewish community in Yesha, and one of its fastest growing.
The road will permit residents of Maale Adumim, and other Jewish towns located on the Jerusalem-Jericho highway, to reach S'derot Eshkol in the capital in about seven minutes, instead of the present 15-20 minutes. Officials believe the 320 million shekel project, one of Israel's largest public works projects, will do a considerable amount to relieve congestion heading into Jerusalem from Maale Adumim.
