President Isaac Herzog's speech to Congress today (Wednesday) was widely praised back in Israel by both coalition and opposition figures.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the address "an important speech by the President who expressed our strong and decisive position against Iran."

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich wrote on Twitter: "An important speech, thank you, Mr. President."

Opposition leader Yair Lapid also praised Herzog's speech, particularly the part that dealt with the ongoing judicial reform controversy in Israel. "I congratulate President Herzog who presented to the joint session of Congress the beautiful face of democratic Israel, and emphasized the shared values - equal rights, freedom of expression, separation of powers, and the independence of the judicial system."

During his speech, Herzog told the members of Congress: "I have great confidence in Israeli democracy. Although we are working through sore issues, just like you, I know our democracy is strong and resilient. Israel has democracy in its DNA."

He called Israel "a country which takes pride in its vibrant democracy, its protection of minorities, human rights, and civil liberties, as laid down by its parliament, the Knesset, and safeguarded by its strong Supreme Court and independent judiciary."

Herzog received applause from the senators and Congressmen 30 times during his speech.
