A month after a bill that would allow National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir to order administrative arrests for criminal suspects was submitted, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant is intervening.
Channel 12 News reported on Saturday night that, ahead of Sunday’s discussion of the bill in the Ministerial Committee for Legislation, Minister Gallant warned the chairman of the committee, Justice Minister Yariv Levin, of the security dangers inherent in this proposal.
Gallant clarified to Levin that "the proposal could lead to the undermining of the public and legal legitimacy of the very existence of these tools, and to the expansion of international criticism on the subject. Challenging the legitimacy of these tools could lead directly to harming the security of the state."
The bill, submitted by MK Tzvika Foghel from the Otzma Yehudit Party, will grant Ben Gvir similar authority to that of the Minister of Defense. The bill stipulates that the Minister of National Security will be permitted to order on his own the deposit of a passport, reporting to a police station, a ban on communicating with certain parties, a ban on making calls over the Internet and imposing work-related restrictions.
