National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Israel Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai agreed on Wednesday evening, at the conclusion of a nine-hour meeting, that Shabtai will step down from his role at the beginning of 2024.
In addition, it was decided on a significant round of appointments in the police, as part of which Superintendent Peretz Amar will be appointed commander of the Tel Aviv District and Superintendent Amir Cohen will be appointed commander of the Southern District.
Superintendent Yoram Sofer will be appointed to the position of project coordinator for the fight against crime in Arab society. The position of head of the training department will be taken by Superintendent Amichai Eshed.
Earlier this week, Shabtai spoke about the possibility of his term being extended amid the tensions with Ben Gvir, and said, "Under these conditions, I will not continue for a fourth year."
The National Security Minister later responded to the Commissioner's remarks and said, "I want to thank him for decades of service for the State of Israel. It's no secret that we had our disagreements, I thank him for his years of service."
