Thirteen students from the Rambam Mesivta High School in Lawrence, NY have arrived in Israel for a week of volunteering on an army base. The program, now in its second year, is the brainchild of Rambam principal Rabbi Yotav Eliach, who came up with the idea for the program two summers ago while doing his own annual volunteer reserve duty in Israel. Last year's group helped out on the Hatzerim Air Force base near Be'er Sheva, were taught how to fire M-16 rifles, were given night hikes and exercises, and were taught Israeli military history. This year's 13 students will spend a week at Julius, a large armor and supply base near Ashdod, where they will help with the packing and distribution of gas masks and with light tank maintenance. In addition, students will study Torah with the rabbi of the base, as well as with two of their school's former teachers, Rabbis Barak Saffer and Danny Myers, who have made aliyah.
