A mural of The Simpsons cartoon family depicted as Jewish inmates of a Nazi death camp was defaced in Milan, Italy on Tuesday on Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The mural was affixed to the walls of the Holocaust Memorial in Milan's train station.

Vandals blackened the yellow stars on the jackets of the Jewish family in the painting.

"The black sign that covers the yellow star sadly recalls attempts to censor and downsize the Holocaust," the Holocaust Memorial said in a social media post.

“We will proceed in the next few days to check the footage from the cameras trying to identify the person responsible. What worries us is to see in this act a possible revisionist and antisemitic tendency, they said. "What we hope is that the rest of the citizenry will respond with its opposite, with solidarity and empathy, demonstrating that the fight against indifference is the key to overcoming racist and anti-democratic tendencies."

They added that the memorial is a "place for meeting and discussion," noting that since the beginning of January 2023, it has been visited by over 90,000 people, including over 42,000 students.

Murals depicting the Simpsons cartoon family as Holocaust victims appeared in Milan on the walls of the Holocaust Memorial at the city’s central train station early in the year.

The murals, by artist aleXsandro Palombo, were installed to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27, according to the UK Jewish News.

They depict the famous cartoon family before and after their deportation to a concentration camp.

In the “before” mural, the family is pictured prior their deportation wearing coats of the style from the era with the yellow Star of David badges Jews were forced to wear during the Holocaust.

In the “after” mural, the Simpsons are shown severely emaciated and wearing striped concentration camp uniforms.

The mural, by Italian artist Alexsandro Palombo, is located on the walls of the Holocaust memorial in the train station, in the area where thousands of Jews were deported by the Nazis to concentration camps.
