In answer to several queries addressed to Arutz-7, we hereby provide the following information regarding the appointment and dismissal of judges in Israel. They are appointed by the President, in accordance with the selection of the Judicial Selection Committee. This nine-member body comprises a chairman, namely the Justice Minister, as well as another minister appointed by the government, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, two other Supreme Court judges chosen by the Court, two MKs chosen by the Knesset, and two representatives of the Israeli Bar Association.
A judge is removed from his or her position only when he reaches age 70; resigns; assumes a position that would forbid one from running for Knesset; if at least 7 members of the above Committee vote to remove him; or if the Disciplinary Court decides that he is no longer fit. If a criminal investigation is opened against him - something that can be done only with the approval of the Attorney-General - the Chief Justice may suspend him for whatever period he deems fit.
Supreme Court Chief Justice Aharon Barak will reach the age of 70 in 2006, at which point he is scheduled to be replaced by Justice Dorit Beinish, who will then be the most senior justice on the Court. Almost two years ago, legislation was proposed by MK Yitzchak Cohen of Shas to equate the position of Supreme Court Chief Justice with that of President of the State and State Comptroller, which are voted upon by the Knesset.
